UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls, the empowerment of women, and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Under the supervision of the Policy Specialist on Violence against Women Data, UN Women is seeking to hire a consultant to technically contribute to the implementation of the Joint Programme on VAW Data, as well as other VAW data and research activities of the Section, in particular those related to the Spotlight Initiative.

Duties and Responsibilities

Contribute technically to the implementation of the Joint Programme on VAW Data:

Contribute technically to inter-agency work around VAW data collection, analysis and reporting, in particular in relation to the monitoring and reporting of SDG target 5.2 indicators, including work around the estimates led by WHO; Contribute to the finalization of the update and expansion of the UN Women’s matrix of VAW prevalence data. Support other work of the Joint Programme, in particular the Expert Group Meeting on VAW Administrative Data and follow-up actions, as well as the development of a request for proposals for regional institutions for capacity building on VAW prevalence surveys in Arab States and Eastern and Southern Africa. Support the communications and dissemination of the Joint Programme activities and results. Provide technical contributions to the data and research activities of the EVAW Section:

Technically contribute to data and research activities for all products of the EVAW Section, including technical assistance to UN Women field offices; Support the preparation of budgets and proposed activities for the EVAW Section 2020 AWP, in consultation with the team colleagues, and upload the AWP as well as accompanying materials in RMS; Prepare and update contents for the VKC, in consultation with the EVAW Section team members, regional and country offices, and particularly in relation to the VAW Data Joint Programme, and upload documents and information, as needed; Support the review processes for key documents under the Spotlight Initiative, particularly for the revision of regional and country level results frameworks; the review of regional and country annual workplans, and the consolidation of inputs to various documents by EVAW Section colleagues, as requested. Support monitoring and reporting of joint initiatives as required.

Required Skills and Experience

Education and certification:

Master’s degree or equivalent in international development, women’s studies, sociology, psychology, public health, or a related field is required.


At least 4 years of progressively responsible experience in ending violence against women and girls programmes, violence against women research and/or programme management; Experience in gender equality and women’s empowerment; Experience working with international institutions, donors and civil society organizations; Experience working in the UN system is an asset.

Language requirements:

Fluency in English is required; Knowledge of another UN official working language is an asset.
