Market ‘ex-wholesale section’

The market (Bandabuliya) is an important landmark almost on the geometric centre of the Walled City of Nicosia. It was the first organised market of Nicosia and represents the focal point for commercial activities in the Selimiye quarter.

It was an open market, then it became partially closed, taking its present form by 1932. The building was separated into retail and wholesale areas. The building is of mixed construction consisting of sandstones, pit stones and reinforced concrete suggesting additions at different times of its history.

The wholesale area was vacated and subsequently rehabilitated in 2003 – 2004 and converted into a ‘bandabuliya recreation area’. However, during the past decade it was left unused. In 2018, a small part has been converted into a theatre/café.

The EC funded ‘Nicosia Bandabuliya Creative Entrepreneurship Hub’ will be established in this area of the ex-wholesale section.

Therefore, the structural stability/condition of the building of the wholesale section is necessary to be technically reviewed and assessed.

The records of the beneficiary show that the columns were enlarged, tie-beams constructed between columns, wooden trusses were repaired, and additional trusses in iron were installed.

Related drawings, documents, tests result from that period of rehabilitation of the wholesale area will be provided for reference to the selected Structural Engineer.

This project is funded by the European Union.
