It’s a great way to help you think about your own motivations and gain some insights from other candidates. This week, it’s the turn of Charles Whitfield from the US who has also worked in Mexico and Ireland and whose passion led to him studying International Public Service.

Where are you from originally and where have you lived? Where are you based now?

I was born and raised in Chicago, United States. I currently live in Chicago and spent some time in Dublin, Ireland.

What did you study?

I studied International Studies for my Bachelors, and International Public Service for my Master’s Degree. I am finishing an MBA degree in August of this year. Apparently, I love studying!

What has been your work experience to date? Have you worked in the International Public Sector or for an NGO already?

My work experience has been primarily with non-profit and governmental organizations. I interned at the Consulate-General of Mexico during college. After graduating, I worked for the British Consulate-General in Chicago for 4 years. I worked as a Consular Assistant for 1 year and as a HR and Finance Officer for the remaining 3 years. My experience at the British Consulate-General exposed me to the International Public Sector. I currently work for a college as a Payroll and Student Employment Manager.

What attracts you to the idea of working in the international public sector and what are your aspirations in terms of career long term?

I always had a strong passion for international affairs and humanitarian outreach. My interest in International Affairs influenced my degree choices for my B.A. and M.Sc (International Public Service). I enjoy working to assist diverse populations and finding innovative solutions to international challenges. Ultimately, I enjoy serving the public and that is why I am attracted to the International Public Sector. I am happiest when doing work that has a positive global impact. I am currently trying to find an entry-level position with an IGO. I believe that once I am able to “enter the door”, then I will be able to achieve my career goal of becoming a Senior-Level International Civil Servant.

What about your hobbies?

I enjoy studying languages. I speak fluent Spanish, and continue to learn Portuguese, French, and Croatian. I also enjoy traveling, reading, and cooking. I am popular in my workplaces, since I occasionally bring homemade baked goods!
