In the Office of the General Counsel (OGC), the incumbent will be providing legal advice on a wide range of matters in connection with the Bank’s project financing activity, in particular:

  • Monitoring legal issues during project appraisal
  • Providing legal input during contract negotiations (loans/grants, guarantees/collateral)
  • Supervising the work of external legal advisors
  • Drafting legal/policy documents, opinions and reports
  • Conducting research concerning topics of relevance for project financing operations (procurement, environmental and social safeguards, compliance, dispute settlement)
  • Carrying out administrative/procedural formalities

The incumbent, depending on his/her experience, may also work on transactions in connection with the Bank’s capital markets activity (funding/derivatives/repos…).

In carrying out the above functions, the incumbent will need to demonstrate a good capacity for managing autonomously the files entrusted to him/her by a Senior Legal Counsel or by the Deputy General Counsel.



University degree in law allowing the admission to a bar association, preferably backed up by postgraduate degree (e.g., LL .M.) (i) obtained in a country other than the one in which the main studies were done; and (ii) focused on banking/finance.

Professional skills

  • Over 4 years of relevant legal experience in the legal department of an international financial institution, an international bank or a law firm of international repute.
  • Priority will be given to candidates with practical experience in the legal structuring of development projects, in particular private finance initiative (PFI) / public-private partnership (PPP) projects, and in the preparation and negotiation of international financing agreements.
  • IT skills: sound knowledge of current IT tools, including electronic document management tools
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and work to challenging deadlines
  • Analytical skills: capacity to analyse, structure and summarise legal information; ability to assess implications; attention to accuracy and detail in legal documents

 Interpersonal skills

  • Adaptability to a multicultural environment and sense of service
  • Good relational and teamwork skills 

Language skills

The minimum requirement is fluency in one of the Bank’s two official languages (English/French) and a basic knowledge of the other. Fluency in German is an advantage.

Employment Conditions 

1) Contract: the CEB offers a 4-year appointment (including a one year probationary period) with, under certain conditions, the possibility of renewal.

2) Grade and salary: • Group II (A2/A3) • The basic salary is contingent upon the grade and step determined at the end of the recruitment process.

3) Benefits (determined by the candidate’s personal situation) • basic family allowance • expatriation allowance • dependent child supplement • one additional monthly dependent child supplement for a single parent • supplement for disabled and dependent parent subject to certain conditions • supplement for disabled or severely disabled child subject to certain conditions • education allowance (children) for expatriate staff member • installation allowance and reimbursement of travel and removal expenses subject to certain conditions

4) Taxation: the items included in points 2) and 3) are not liable for income tax.
