Using your alumni network to boost your career
Whether you are looking for your first job or your next career move, an efficient way to enhance your job search is to reach out to your school/university alumni network. Alumni can be a great resource for valuable career advice. They are also potential gateways into organisations offering the kind of job opportunities you are interested in.
Explore your alumni association: check out your alumni association, search for alumni groups in your specific industry and keep an eye out for alumni social and networking events.
Network online with your fellow alumni: start following Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn account of various alumni groups as well as your school. This will eventually connect you with people who will be able to help you.
Stay proactive by keeping an eye on the job postings of the organisations you are interested in. And when a position becomes available, ask your alumni contact for help in getting your application to the right person.
It is advisable to establish a minimum personal relationship with the alumni before asking for help with the job opening you want to apply for. At that stage, be clear in your communication with the alumni as to what you are looking for, and importantly, how you would like him/her to help you (if they want to of course!).
Remember to be both courteous and clear about who you are and what you are after.
Follow these simple rules when connecting with alumni to maximise your chance of response:
- Introduce yourself and include your school year and major,
- Explain how you got his/her contact information,
- Be specific with what you are asking from him/her,
- Attach your CV.
